Lullingstone Castle & The World Garden

The Lullingstone Story

Lullingstone Castle is one of England's oldest family estates and was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Set within 120 acres of stunning Kent countryside, the estate has been home to the Hart Dyke family for 20 generations.

The Manor House and Gatehouse were built in 1497, with views across the beautiful 15 acre lake. The estate has hosted royal visitors including Henry VIII and Queen Anne.

Tom Hart Dyke

Tom Hart Dyke is the 20th generation of the family to live at Lullingstone Castle and it was during a plant hunting trip in 2000 that he rose to international prominence when he was kidnapped. It was during his nine months of captivity that the idea of The World Garden was born. A garden containing the plants which Tom had collected from his travels around the world, planted out with other plants from those countries.

The World Garden at Lullingstone opened to the public in 2005.
